Permanent Labour Market Opinions Replace Arranged Employment Opinions

On May 4, 2013, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) stopped accepting arranged employment opinions. Employers who wish to hire a foreign worker full-time in a permanent position are required to apply for a labour market opinion. In addition to supporting a permanent resident application, the new “permanent duration” LMO may also be used as the basis for a work permit application.

Multiple-entry visa

Canada’s citizenship and immigration minister, Chris Alexander, announced that in April 2014 95% of visitor visas issued were multiple-entry visas (MEVs). MEVs allow qualified visitors to enter and exit Canada for six months at a time for up to 10 years.

Can+ Program – Mexico

Under the Can+ Program, Mexican nationals who have travelled to Canada or the United States within the last 10 years will be eligible for expedited visa processing. Visas are expected to be processed in 10 days or less.

CBSA charges individuals for unauthorized employment of foreign nationals

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced charges against three individuals and three companies for the unauthorized employment of foreign nationals.

On April 8, 2014, following a three-month investigation, members of the CBSA’s Criminal Investigation Division charged three individuals and three Ontario corporations with four counts of unauthorized employment of foreign nationals, contrary to section 124(1)(c) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA). It is alleged that the accused employed a number of foreign nationals who were not authorized to work in Canada.

The Wild Horse port of entry (Alberta)  is extending its hours of operation in the summer season, starting May 15, 2014  and ending September 30, 2014. The hours will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Chief Mountain Port of Entry Opens for the season

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is pleased to announce that the Chief Mountain port of entry is re-opening for the season, beginning Thursday, May 15, 2014. Chief Mountain is located along Highway 6 in Alberta.

May 15 – May 31:                      9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

June 1 – September 1:               7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Scarborough welcomes more new citizens

More than 3,200 new citizens from approximately 135 countries were welcomed to Canada in Scarborough over the past month—more than double the number of individuals who became citizens in Scarborough in April 2013.

Calgary welcomed 1,164 new Canadians from more than 100 countries over the past month—more than four times the number of people who became Canadian citizens in Calgary in April last year when 284 new citizens were sworn in.
